He was a French oil painter, pastel artist, drypoint engraver, and designer, best known for his many portraits of high-society women in Belle Époque, France. He also created the night sky constellation ceiling mural for the Grand Central Terminal train station in New York City. He was the father of Jean Helleu and grandfather of Jacques Helleu, both artistic directors for the Parfums Chanel brand.
